Despite running our glampsite locally for a while, we only recently discovered Broughton Castle—mostly because its doors are only open to the public on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the spring and summer months.

A Noble Lineage and Hollywood Connections
Stepping onto the grounds of Broughton Castle means stepping into centuries of British history. The estate is proudly owned by the Fiennes family—yes, the very same family tree that boasts acting heavyweights Ralph and Joseph Fiennes, as well as the legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.
Architecturally, it is a fascinating blend: technically a grand stately home at its core, but with dramatic crenellations added later to give it that quintessential fortress feel. It is surrounded by a wide, peaceful moat that mirrors the stone walls and makes the entire approach feel like a living fairy tale.
Giants Halls and Hidden History
Walking through the front doors, the first thing that hits you is the sheer scale of the place. The soaring high ceilings and the magnificent grand hall make you feel wonderfully tiny. Of course, looking up at those vaulted heights, my mind immediately went to practical matters: imagine trying to clean the cobwebs up there! Keeping our yurt ceiling windows spotless is quite enough of a challenge for one person.
As you cross the threshold by the main door, keep your eyes peeled for a fascinating historical detail. Faint witch circles—protective apotropaic marks etched into the stone—are still visible near the entrance, a stark reminder of the medieval fears and superstitions of the home’s original inhabitants.
Stately Gardens and Riverside Tranquility
Beyond the castle walls lie stunning formal gardens. Even during this year’s particularly harsh, dry summer, the grounds staff have kept the lawns, flower beds, and structural topiary looking breathtakingly vibrant.
Adding to the serene atmosphere, the moat is a lovely sitting spot. Sitting by the water provides a wonderfully peaceful backdrop, making it the ultimate spot to slow down, breathe in the fresh countryside air, and enjoy a quiet moment away from the bustle of modern life.
Afternoon Tea with a Cinematic View
No historic day out is complete without a proper treat, and the on-site tea room delivers brilliantly. They offer an incredible selection of homemade cakes, bakes, and hot drinks. You can choose to sit indoors or grab a table nestled right under the shade of the trees, looking out over the majestic stone facade of the castle.
If you wander into the tea room, take a moment to look at the display of posters and photographs on the wall. It comes as no surprise that a building this picturesque has starred in dozens of famous films and television series over the decades.
